THE TWOFOLD EXHIBITIONS

an artistic exchange between Germany and Korea initiated by Eun-Joo Shin

Frankfurt, Seoul and Seosan, 2026-2027 and beyond

The exhibition Exophony at KOMET K project space in Frankfurt am Main, featuring FRANK*-artists Eun-Joo Shin, E. M. C. Collard, Isabel Friedrich, Christina Kral and Tatiana Urban, marked the launch of the intercultural exchange project TWOFOLD between Frankfurt and South Korea.

In October 2026, the five are set to travel to Korea to continue the project with three exhibitions: It starts with the group exhibition Inyeon 인연 featuring five artists from Seosan – Tae-goong Jung, Hyun-ju Lee, Ji-in Seo, Hee-bun Yang, Sung-ja Yang – alongside the participating FRANK* artists at Seohae Art Space, founded by artist Tae-goong Jung. This is followed by the opening of the FRANK* exhibition German Painting Today at the Jang Eun Sun Gallery in Seoul. The trio of Korean shows concludes with the group exhibition I-won 이원 (二元) at independent Seoul exhibition space ECKEIDA, run by artist Eunu Lee, which will feature seven artists based in Seoul alongside the visiting German group: Juyeon Choi, Eunu Lee, Jisu Lee, Resoom Kim Jiyoung, Youngju Song, Ji-in Seo and You See Yearn.

In August 2027, the exchange is set to continue with an exhibition in Frankfurt, with the Korean then also hoping to travel to the metropolis on the river Main with their work.

Initiated by Korean-born FRANK* artist Eun-Joo Shin on the occasion of her 30th anniversary year of living and working in Germany, the project organized by the FRANK* group takes her biography as a starting point and example of the international interconnectedness of the Frankfurt art world. The project aims to establish a sustainable, coequal artistic exchange between the FRANK* network and the Korean artists from the megacity and the countryside, with a nod to Frankfurt’s own status as both an industrial hub and a city that has kept its village character steeped in rural traditions. It hopes to connect with audiences in Frankfurt, Seoul and Seosan through participatory exhibition formats including the “Instant Publication: Traveling Edition” book project, Art Walks held by the artists, and more.

The event Kunst@Stulle will be part of the participatory program at komet k; it is an informal discussion session held around a laid table with sandwiches, snacks and drinks.

In addition to discussing the artworks on display in the exhibition and the intercultural exchange project TWOFOLD, within which the exhibition is embedded, the scope of the discussion will this time be expanded to include the question of the use of AI in contemporary art.

There is also a significant need for information and discussion on this topic amongst many artists and those interested in culture, which goes beyond purely technical or academic approaches. Alongside concerns about the uncontrolled and uncompensated exploitation of creative work by generative AI models, the aim is also to raise awareness that AI systems can replicate and reinforce existing societal biases, particularly when women, non-Western perspectives or marginalized groups are under-represented in the underlying digital archives and training data. This highlights a concrete need for education on the importance of diverse and inclusive data sets for AI systems, as well as for spaces in which these issues can be critically discussed.

The event was funded by Frauenreferat Frankfurt.

Die Ausstellung ÜBER:MORGEN bringt zehn Künstlerinnen aus Deutschland, Polen und Südamerika zusammen, die sich in ihren Arbeiten und vorangegangenen Kollaborationen schon mit dem Topos Zeit beschäftigt haben. Dieser interkulturelle Austausch über das universelle Morgen präsentiert eine facettenreiche Reflexion über das Archiv des Gewesenen und erkundet die fließenden Grenzen zwischen zeitlichen Realitäten. Dabei erforschen die beteiligten Künstlerinnen das Terrain der Zukunftswelten mittels Installationen, Gemälden und Mixed-Media-Arbeiten.

Es ist nicht die Linearität der Zeit, die ins Bild gesetzt wird , sondern ihre Simultaneität, die sich in jedem Individuum erneut zur Erscheinung bringt: conscience collective, sedimentierte Erfahrungen, weitergepflanzte Erlebnisse, Projektionen, Narbe und Ornament.

The exhibition ÜBER:MORGEN brings together ten artists from Germany, Poland and South America who have already dealt with the topos of time in their works and previous collaborations. This intercultural exchange on the universal tomorrow presents a multifaceted reflection on the archive of the past and explores the fluid boundaries between temporal realities. The participating artists explore the terrain of future worlds by means of installations, paintings and mixed-media works.

It is not the linearity of time that is depicted, but its simultaneity, which reappears in each individual: conscience collective, sedimented experiences, experiences that have been planted, projections, scars and ornaments.

Playing the grounds

Feste Spielregeln gibt es nicht – Malerei als experimentelle Spielfläche – das ist die gemeinsame Basis für die zehn Künstlerinnen des neuen Netzwerkes FRANK* aus Frankfurt am Main.

Playground wortwörtlich zu nehmen scheinen die Bildwelten aus individuell gebauten Spielfiguren, die Zeit und Raum nahezu neu definieren (Isabel Friedrich) oder die Malereien mit Tieren und Figuren in selbstvergessenen, spielerischen Tätigkeiten (Ekatarina Leo).

Spielerische Erweiterung der Malerei in den Raum suchen die malerischen Arbeiten mit Ergänzung um handgefärbte Stoffbahnen (Sarah Schoderer), mit fast minimalistischer Reduzierung der Malerei auf Stoff und Farbe (Toni Wombacher) oder einer freien, offenen Hängung in der Raummitte mit transluzider Wirkung (Eva Schwab). Experimentelle Konzepte in Bezug zu anderen Medien wie der Fotografie (Sigi am Thor), Farbe in ihrer freien, spielerischen Qualität als Ausgangspunkt mit einer Verdichtung zu pflanzlichen Formierungen (Tatiana Urban), Spiel mit der Bildauffassung des Comics (E.M.C. Collard) und die Hinterfragung der klassischen Landschaftsmalerei als Spielfeld der Elemente bis zur Auflösung in freie Malerei (Julia Roppel) erweitern und ergänzen das Spektrum.

Für Playground – 48h Neukölln möchten wir einen einladenden visuellen Erlebnisraum aus unseren Werken kuratieren, den sowohl als Ausstellung, aber auch spielerisch in einer Art „Schnitzeljagd durch die Bilder“ erfahren kann.
